How far can you go in a day from Batumi?

From a two-hour evening walk to a full day at Martvili Canyon: what fits into one day out of Batumi.

Batumi sits right where the Black Sea meets the hills of Adjara. That makes it an easy base: the sea is at the end of the street, and the green mountains start less than an hour inland. The real question is how far you want to drive.

Under an hour: the hills of Adjara

Mtirala and Makhuntseti are both about 40 minutes from the city. That is close enough for a half-day trip with time to spare for the beach in the afternoon.

  • Waterfalls & Zipline Half-Day: 4 hours in the Makhuntseti valley, from $32 per person.
  • Mtirala Off-Road: 4 hours on an ATV, a Can-Am Maverick buggy or a horse, from $15.
  • Wine & Dine: 5 hours with two waterfalls, Queen Tamar’s stone bridge and a long lunch at a family winery, from $39.

Two to three hours away: caves and canyons

Prometheus Cave is around 2.5 hours north, Martvili Canyon about 3 hours. Together they make a full day of 10–12 hours: a lit walk through the cave, gliding down the emerald canyon and a soak in the Nokalakevi hot springs. It is a long day, but you are back in Batumi the same night.

Staying in the city

If you would rather not get in a car at all, the Batumi Evening Walking Tour takes two hours through the Old Town, the Piazza, the Alphabet Tower and Ali & Nino as the lights come on along the sea.

Every tour starts and ends in Batumi, with an English- or Russian-speaking guide.
